But before we get into that, have you ever wondered what garage door springs are? And what are the types?
What is Garage Door Springs?
Garage door springs are the feature in a garage door that is interchangeable and it helps in opening and closing of the garage door. These springs are used to counteract the gravitational force of the door. Meaning, it enables the door for you to lift easily and close easily.
The features in the garage door springs are very different than those of normal door springs. This is because the door springs in the garage door are designed to make the door feel lightweight. Unlike the normal door springs, which are placed horizontally, and doesn’t affect the force of the door.
Well in some cases it does, if you have a garage door spring that is not suitable and is too tight, you may end up having your garage door resulting in being too tight and too tough to open and close.
Most garage doors that are of residential houses are seven to eight feet tall on average. And usually, garage doors that are of seven-foot-tall, require 25-inch springs whilst the right eight-foot ones may require a garage door spring of 27 inches. The measurements and the type of garage door spring usually depend on the type of garage door that you own.
These springs are mostly made of several types of materials. Some are made of Oil-tempered and some are galvanized while others can be metal coated springs. The average life span for a garage door spring is of 7 to 9 years but if it’s of a cheaper quality then you may end up having it ruined in 4 to 6 years.

Types of Garage door springs
If you happen to own a garage door then on average you need to understand the types and materials that these springs are made of. Remember, garage door springs are an important feature of a garage door, hence getting to know about them is important too.
Generally, there are two major types of Garage Springs, which are:
- Extension Springs
- Torsion Springs
The springs that are usually attached at the garage door are usually called Torsion Springs. These springs created a balance between the door and the floor when lifted. By the word, balance, we mean that these springs create an equal level of force that a door can take when opening or closing. When a door is properly balanced, it should be able to lift easily to open and close easily when the springs stop. These springs twist and cause rotation as they open and close. Generally, torsion springs are known to last for a longer period than any other type of springs out there.
Generally, these springs are attached to the door tracks that are mounted above. Unlike torsion springs, these springs are often placed in the horizontal tracks. Garage door springs of these sorts are called extension springs. The function of extension springs is for pulling the force of the springs to emphasize pressure on the garage door upwardly which is against gravity. Extension springs are mostly known to be heavy-duty springs and most of the pressure is placed on the springs whilst opening and closing.
Whether you own a residential house or a small shop, a Garage door is important. You will always need them for proper safety and since these doors are made of high-quality heavy-duty metal, the springs of the garage doors are just as important. Hence getting to know about the types and how to repair the garage was also a necessity for you if you happen to own a garage door.
